The last open water of 2010
Sun, 26 Sep 2010

It was on a crisp bright 26 September 2010 that Broadway and Failsworth Lifesaving Club and Droylsden Lifesaving Club met for the last Open Water of the 2010 season.
Gaynor, our intrepid photographer, text me to say that the whole family were ill so I dug the old camera out of the mothballs and found some batteries and set forth. It was extremely cold when I got in the car and drove to pick my niece, Jade, up.
We made our way to Debdale where I was told that the water wasn’t as cold!!! Yes right, I don’t think that any of our members would fall for that one!! However by the time we reach the last Open Water of the season we have seen off most of the attendees and what is left are very hardy young people who ‘like’, can I say the word like, taking part in the open water events come rain, snow, hurricanes and heat waves.
There was a lot of screaming to start with.....well wouldn’t you......but by the time they were in the water they were having a ball.
Special mention here to Craig Lund and Liz Taylor; Craig was one of our members finishing off his National Beach Lifeguard Qualification and Liz was one of the bodies, for more than one candidate. She looked to be having a ball and when I asked her she confirmed it...brilliant!!
One point to note here....was that the camera was playing up.....or maybe I couldn’t remember how it worked....possibly the latter so lets see what I actually took as it kept shutting down, oh well......I had a go.......have a look at the photographs of the day.
Again, as in previous years, thanks go to the tutors and assessors and the behind the scenes girls, Gaynor, Karen, me Elaine, Danny, Paul, Cath and anyone else, you know who you are. See you all next year!!

Debdale Open Water 22 August 2010
Sun, 22 Aug 2010
We arrived at Debdale Park with the clouds over cast and threatening rain. But true to form after everyone got ready, out came the sunshine. After the group photographs, all the lifesavers were divided into their groups: Young Rookies were headed by Paul, Bronze and Silver Cross headed by Cath/Alan and Kirsty and Eddie headed a mixture from his Droylsden LSC. Danny had a watchful eye on two swimmers, who were practising for the Great British Swim, held at the Lake District in September 2010. As they all entered the water, Eddie took the rescue boards out to the middle of the waters and began training in rescues with use of the boards. Paul took the young Rookies out with the buoys and then later to the centre to continue there training, with a helping hand of Liz and Craig. Cath, Alan and Kirsty began the Bronze and Silver Cross exams with the required rescues and resuscitation techniques. All the groups had a wonderful time in the water and at the end of the session Paul allowed two of his rookies out on the paddle boards. Thank you to everyone for there continued support and thank you to the lifesavers… once again we had a fantastic day.

Open Water Fleetwood Water Festival NOT......!!
Sat, 31 Jul 2010
Unfortunately Wyre Borough Council cancelled the Fleetwood Water Festival.
That didn't stop us.....we at Broadway and Failsworth, Droylsden and Fleetwood Lifesaving Clubs had our own water challenge 2010 in stead.
In the end we had a wonderful day with the children and adults taking part in the Body Board Experience. They rode the waves like the Pro’s and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. Thank you to Nigel and the team of instructors.
Once everyone had completed their Body Boarding they were put into teams of three (One Rookie, One Bronze Medallion and a Lifeguard). The water tasks of the North West Lifesaving Water Challenge 2010 had begun. This included a Timed Swim and a Body Board swim.
Once they finished everyone got changed and ready for the Dry side Scenarios which included Rope Throw Rescue, 3 Casualties (Dislocated and a cut arm, Unconscious Body and Resuscitation) and a Bike accident.
Once everyone had completed all dry side tasks, marks were totalled and awards were given out. Everyone who took part in the Challenge received a medal.
Hot dogs, Meat & Potato pie and Apple pie and cream followed to complete the fantastic day
We had an excellent turnout today with Broadway and Failsworth, Droylsden and Fleetwood Lifesaving Clubs working hard to bring safety to the waters edge. Thank you to everyone who was involved with the running of today's activity.
Weather Report
The weather was Sunny and Blue Skies northerly wind, creating a high waves, excellent for body boarding.
Open Water Fleetwood 11 July 2010
Sun, 11 Jul 2010
There were doubts of entering the water on the 11th July, as we were met by 30mph winds and an undercurrent which would take everyone's stamina, strength and professionalism to conquer.
We had a decision to make and we chose to let everyone enter the water under strict supervision as we had all our young lifesavers to consider. By around 10am the life savers and lifeguards entered the water. The group were protected by Blackpool's canoe team and the lifeguards kept a keen eye on all the lifesavers (especially the younger children). This was an experience and a challenge, even from the best of the best of the teams.
The waves crashed over everyone’s heads, knocking them over like skittles in a bowling alley. Laughter and screams echoed around the beach through the strong winds. The undercurrent couldn't make its mind up sweeping groups of lifesavers up the coast then diverting them just as quickly back down.
Along the coast line were many keen fishermen waiting for there biggest catch of the day (Luckily it wasn't going to be one of our children)
Well done to everyone who entered the water and gained a little insight of how strong the waves can be, even on such a lovely day.
Thank you to all the Tutors and helpers for such a wonderful, successful and accident free day.
Quote of the day—” Wiped out, Fantastic”

Email from Sue and Syd Holt, Fleetwood Lifesaving Club
Wed, 28 Apr 2010
I received an email from Fleetwood regarding the Open Water Events in 2009. I thought the comments gave an outstanding reflection on our Team of Staff and Lifesavers and wish to share this email with you.
Dear Danny, (Chairman of B&FLSC)
Observations were held on your Open Water dates at the Fleetwood Coastal venue on the 7 June, 5 July and 6 Sept 2009. It was generally agreed by Fleetwood members including the public that the events were well organised and supervised to a very high standard. These observations were borne out by the professionals engaged on the Blackpool Beach Patrol Service in its 1st year acting on behalf of the Wyre Borough Council. Two of the
officers, although in their late 30’s early 40’s who still compete and swim in open water commented on the general level of organisation plus the attitude of those involved including candidates and supervision.
Reflecting back over the years, the events that have been staged at Fleetwood with Broadway and Failsworth LSC and your contemporaries from the other Manchester clubs have enhanced beach use and made possible developments with other local organisations and the district council.
Achievements so far, through the joint collaboration have exceeded all
Expectations. In conclusion we at Fleetwood LSC would kike to thank you all at Broadway and Failsworth LSC for your efforts and commitment. Please convey to the principle officers of our associate clubs our many thanks for all their efforts and hope they will continue in the future. On a more personal note, members of the Waterfront Lifesaving and Surf Sports extend their personal thanks to you for your visit in May of 2009.
Regards and best wishes to all
Sue and Syd Holt—Fleetwood LSC
I am very pleased to have received this email and hope we can keep up the
Standards we have achieved in 2009.
Please note: - Open Water forms have now been issued and need to be handed in As Soon As Possible in order to process candidate’s names etc.
Let us make 2010 an exceptional year …
Thank you
Danny
